Cheap Dedicated Rack
I'm looking for co-location and cheap dedicated rack for server hosting. Do you know any companies that offer cheap dedicated racks?

Just google for the cheap ones. There are lots of 'em. I'm sure you will find the cheapest one which meets your needs. Good Luck.

Are you looking for just the rack itself to purchase, or you talking about one to purchase inside a data-center?

While considering a Dedicated server, look for a Hosting provider who offers Fully Managed server rather than going for a UnManaged one. Managed Server hosting means the hosting provider manages the Server for you. The hosting provider takes care of all the Technical issues which occur with the server. He also updates the OS patches, security patches and takes care of all the security issues of your server. If you have any issues with your server, you just need to contact your hosting provider and his support staff will take care of the issue from there onwards..Whereas in Unmanaged one you are the one who takes care of the server. So if there is any issue, you won't get any help from the hosting provider. This might result in downtime and you might loose your clients and suffer heavy losses. People prefer to choose a Managed Server as compared to Unmanaged one, so that they can concentrate on their Business and let the hosting provider manage the server.

Softlayer doesn't do co-location, and if they did it would be expensive, and co-location isn't the way to go unless you have at least 30 servers, and even at that it will take at least 6-12 months to make a return on your servers alone, it's not a good investment unless your charging 3x the market value for servers which is hard to do in this market.
I'd suggest just leasing from a provider, because even if you do profit, let's say you have hardware problems with one of your servers, and you have no hardware on stock, you have to send it to them, ship it, and have them figure out what's bad, so that could take 2-5 days in time, before you could get the server running, the hardware set you back a few hundred bucks, let's say you needed them to figure out the problem they will bill you $50-150 an hour and say it took 12 hours, your looking at $600-1800 just for one problem which could be a year's worth of server costs leasing one.Last edited by Nexthostdotorg; 06-17-2011 at 10:09 PM.
